Jonathan Demme to Present Festival Favorite 'Gimme the Loot'

First-time filmmaker Adam Leon has had a pretty great year. Almost exactly a year ago his debut film “Gimme the Loot” premiered at SXSW to an extremely warm reception (Eric Kohn called it “a lovingly handmade affair” in his review from the festival). The film won Best Narrative Feature in Austin and was swiftly snatched up by Sundance Selects. It has since played at Cannes and been nominated for Best First Film at this year’s Spirit Awards.

Sundance Selects will release the film on March 22nd at the IFC Center followed by a nationwide expansion, and now Leon’s charming debut has another champion in it’s corner in the form of “Silence of the Lambs” director Jonathan Demme. Demme, who called the film “one crazily accomplished American motion picture debut,” will “present” the film when it hits theaters next month in the role of executive producer.

The sweet, scrappy New York tale follows two Bronx teens (Tysheeb Hickson and Tashiana R. Washington) as they strive to make their mark in the graffiti art world. You can read our interview with Leon here.
