Magnolia Pictures Will Release Lars von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac' in the U.S.; Likely Won't Be in Cannes

Magnolia Pictures has acquired the U.S. rights to both the hard and softcore cuts of Lars von Trier’s highly anticipated sexual epic “Nymphomaniac.” The company released the Palme d’Or winner’s last film, “Melancholia,” first on VOD then theatrically in 2011. Expect “Nymphomaniac” to go down the same route some time later this year.

“After the tremendous and never predictable experience of distributing ‘Melancholia,’ we couldn’t be more excited to be working with Mr. von Trier again on the ‘Nymphomaniac’ films,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles in a statement. “He’s such an exciting and talented filmmaker—it’s an honor and a thrill to be associated with his world.”

Charlotte Gainsbourg, Shia LaBeouf, Stellan Skarsgård and Uma Thurman star in the sure-to-be-controversial project that follows “the erotic life of a woman from the age of zero to the age of 50.”

Meanwhile, Cineuropa yesterday reported that the film will likely not make it to Cannes, not because von Trier was declared a persona non grata by the festival in 2011, but because the film won’t be finished in time. “Four editors were working around the clock to meet the Cannes deadline, but we had to give it up,” said Danish producer and CEO of Zentropa Entertainments Peter Aalbæk Jensen. “After 268 script pages, 11 weeks of shooting and with 100 hours of material it would have been rape to finish the two films in time for the festival. But there is absolutely no bad blood between us.” The deadline for films to be submitted to Cannes for consideration is March 14.
