German filmmaker Mareike Wegener’s art conspiracy documentary “Mark Lombardi: Death-Defying Acts of Art and Conspiracy,” has been acquired for North American rights by Submarine Deluxe. The documentary examines the life, political conspiracy art, and sudden suicide of American Neo-Conceptual artist Mark Lombardi whose artwork predicted major events and scandals including 9/11. A theatrical release by is planned for later this year, with a DVD release on the Submarine Deluxe imprint to follow.

The film goes beyond mere artistic praise and attempts to look closer at the man considered to be the Nostradamus of the art world. Known for his pencil drawings of intricate patterns that linked global finance and international terrorism, Lombardi’s work revealed research on a variety of scandals, including the BCCI scandal in his drawing entitled “BCCI” which became an object of FBI investigation following the September 11 attacks. Through interviews with Lombardi’s family members, close friends, fellow artists, and gallerists, Wegener attempts to uncover the intentions and impact of the artist who took his life unexpectedly in 2000.

The acquisition of “Mark Lombardi” was negotiated by David Koh & Dan Braun of Submarine Deluxe along with Stanley Buchthal of Dakota Group Ltd. and Stefan Kloos of Rise & Shine World Sales.

David Koh, Dan Braun, and Stanley Buchthal stated, “We have been mystified by Mark Lombardi’s artwork and this brilliant and fascinating movie sheds light on his enigmatic nature, character, life and his mystifying prophecies.”

“This film is so much more than a documentary on an amazing artist,” Stefan Kloos of Rise & Shine World Sales said of the deal. “I like to watch it as an arts thriller, and we are extremely happy to count on Submarine´s outstanding talent of introducing it to the North American market.”
