Project of the Day: Look Behind the Scenes of MAD Magazine in 'When We Went MAD!'

Here’s your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you’ll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

When We Went MAD!

Tweetable Logline:

MAD Magazine poked fun at everything – and changed the world. Here’s a peek behind the scenes at this culture rotting institution.

Elevator Pitch:

If you were a teenager during the last sixty years, you or someone you know read MAD Magazine. MAD was as funny as it was dangerous. It was your instruction manual on impending adulthood and all the false promises that came with it. MAD forced you to raise to its level – it never talked down to you. And most importantly, MAD inspired. “The Simpsons,” Stephen Colbert, “The Daily Show,” Howard Stern – all offspring of MAD. “When We Went MAD!” talks to those responsible for MAD and those influenced by MAD. It’s history gone MAD.

Production Team:

Co-Producer, Director: Alan Bernstein (co-writer, co-producer, director of the feature film “One Half Gone”)
Co-Producer: Doug Gilford
Cinematographers: Patrick Collar, Gabriel Flores, Jesse Eisenhardt

About the Production:

“I was six and found my first issue of MAD at a drugstore newsstand. I had no idea what I was looking at: Spy Vs. Spy, Don Martin, the Fold-In… I didn’t always get the jokes, but I knew I was looking at the ticket into something special and I wanted in.
As I grew and learned more about those who brought us MAD – I realized their stories were just as fascinating. Through MAD, the artists and writers changed the landscape of American humor, and I needed to document how they did it. ” — Alan Bernstein

Current Status:

Half of the interviews shot, fundraising to complete shooting and post.
