Trailer of the Week: Red Band Trailer for Danny Boyle's 'Trance' is Gory, Sexy and Sure to Mess With Your Head

Before We Saw the Red Band Trailer, We Thought:Trance,” Danny Boyle’s first film since 2010’s “127 Hours,” looks like a trippy, hypnotic mindfuck filled with all the director’s characteristic visual pizazz. The movie jumped to the top of our “must-see” list after the theatrical trailer dropped last month, but we were never expecting the kind of pulpy gore showcased in this latest red band promo.

And Now? Red band trailers always run the risk of spoiling a movie by revealing its most titillating moments, yet this new bloody, uncensored look at “Trance” only leaves us salivating for more. Opening with Rosario Dawson’s sensual voice luring James MacAvoy into a literal trance, the promo suggests Boyle will be returning to the mesmerizing, genre-bending roots he established in films like “The Beach” and “Trainspotting.”

In an out of sequence series of shots, the trailer gradually reveals the movie’s premise: suffering from amnesia, a fine art auctioneer-turned-thief (MacAvoy) must undergo hypnosis to recover the location of a stolen painting. Cutting to flashbacks of MacAvoy being pinned down and tortured by the leader of a criminal gang (Vincent Cassel), it becomes clear that physical threats have failed to produce answers. At the behest of Cassel, Dawson’s hypnotherapist begins delving deep into the recesses of MacAvoy’s psyche, and that’s where things start to get trippy.

If you could stomach the tendon-cutting gore of “127 Hours,” you’ll probably be good watching the nail-pulling torture shown here, but we can’t promise you’ll be prepared for the trailer’s final payoff. Let’s just say MacAvoy’s not the only one in the film who loses his head…
