VODetails: 'Rubberneck'

More and more films premiere on Video on Demand — if they don’t simply bypass a theatrical release altogether. Because VOD reviews are often scarce and hard to find, Criticwire created VODetails, a recurring column to help you figure out whether a new VOD release is worth your hard-earned dollar. This time we’re looking at “Rubberneck,” the OTHER new film from Alex Karpovsky — not an terrifying horror movie set entirely in a brutal traffic jam.

Director: Alex Karpovsky

Cast: Alex Karpovsky, Jamie Ray Newman, Dennis Staroselsky

Current Criticwire AverageB (out of 6 critics)

Official Synopsis: Months after a weekend fling, Boston research scientist Paul (Karpovsky) continues to lust after his beautiful coworker Danielle (Newman), nurturing his fantasies with the occasional polite exchange at work. But once she starts dating another scientist at their lab, his infatuation quickly turns into obsession — and he finds himself unable to control his desires. A slow-burn character study-turned-psychosexual thriller, co-written by Karpovsky and Garth Donovan, ‘Rubberneck’ is a chillingly believable story of workplace romance gone wrong.”

Rudy Cecera, Screen Comment:

“The most compelling drawn-out thriller I’ve seen in a while.”

Christopher Bourne, Twitch:

“The continuing emergence of a remarkable talent both in front of and behind the camera.”

John DeForeHollywood Reporter:

“A solid dramatic turn for a filmmaker best known for playing comedic parts.”

Jordan HoffmanBadass Digest:

“A very interesting psychological portrait.”

Henry Stewart, The L Magazine:

Karpovsky’s direction at least allows us to wrestle awhile with the banality of psychopathy.”

Rubberneck” is now available on VOD and opens in limited release in New York this Friday.
