Charlize Theron To Star In Comedy 'Ladies Night,' Directed By Fred Savage (Yes, That Fred Savage)

Thanks to the success of “Prometheus” and “Snow White and the Huntsman” last summer (as well as her acclaimed, if ignored-by-awards-bodies performance in “Young Adult“), Charlize Theron is more in demand than ever before. The actress has already wrapped one blockbuster, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and has lots more bubbling under waiting to be picked out as her next project: sci-fi Agent 13 with Rupert Wyatt, Scott Derrickson‘s horror Zwart Water,” crime thriller Cities of Refuge,” John Madden‘s “Murder Mystery,a biopic of Marie Colvin, a remake of “Sympathy For Lady Vengeance,Seth MacFarlane‘s comedy A Million Days To Die In The West,” and an adaptation of Gillian Flynn‘s Dark Places.”

And somehow, she’s found space for one more, as The Hollywood Reporter brings news that Theron will star in the comedy “Ladies Night,” being backed by Skydance Productions (“Star Trek,” “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol“). The film will see Theron star as a woman who goes for one last night on the town with her girlfriends before moving to New York. Yep, it sounds like “The Hangover” meets “Bridesmaids,” but with “Happy Endings” writer David Caspe being behind the script, it’ll hopefully at least be funny.

Theron’s been developing the project for a while, and has hired Fred Savage to direct. Yes, the former “Wonder Years” star, who’s been carving out an impressive career as a TV director, with credits including “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia,” “Party Down,” “Modern Family” and “2 Broke Girls.” He should be a fairly safe pair of hands, and Theron’s taste tends to be decent, so fingers crossed this turns out to be more “Bridesmaids” than “Bachelorette.” The film is being pencilled in to shoot in early 2014, so we’ll likely see it in theaters in the spring of 2015.
