James Franco Stands Up For Sex In Film After Travis Mathews’ ‘I Want Your Love’ Is Banned In Australia

James Franco Stands Up For Sex In Film After Travis Mathews' 'I Want Your Love' Is Banned In Australia

Less than a week before his Disney film “Oz: The Great and Powerful” hits theaters everywhere, James Franco has stood up in support of the essential opposite of a Disney film, Travis Mathews’ “I Want Your Love.”

The Australian Classification Board has banned the movie from being screened anywhere in the country, including LGBT festivals in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane — where it was already programmed to screen. The film — which debuted on the festival circuit last summer — details the lives of a group of thirty-ish San Francisco gay men, and features explicit sex. Mathews has already followed it up with a collaboration with Franco, the Sundance premiere “Interior. Leather Bar,” which also featured explicit content.

“This just is such a disappointment to me, and just seems really silly,” Franco says in the video he made in support of “I Want Your Love.” “The reason I approached Travis to make a film was because of the work he did in ‘I Want Your Love.’ He was using sex in a very sophisticated way. Sex is such a big part of our lives and even if it isn’t a big part of your life, that’s a conscious choice to keep it out. It’s how we create children. It’s how we connect. To keep it from films that want to explore it as human behavior is very short-sighted and very hypocritical. I don’t think we’d be having this conversation if he had made a very violent film.”
