FX announced last week that Ang Lee would be directing the pilot for its new project “Tyrant,” and now sister network Fox has lined up its own high profile filmmaker to helm the pilot for “Rake.”
Deadline reports that Sam Raimi will be directing the pilot for the hourlong project, which hasn’t yet been ordered to series. “Rake” stars Greg Kinnear as Keegan Joye, a brilliant disaster of a criminal defense lawyer with a gambling habit and a lack of any filter — so, kind of like “House” but with lawyers.
The series is based on an ongoing Australian show of the same name that stars Richard Roxburgh (“Moulin Rouge!”), as is being executive produced by Peter Duncan (the creator of the original), Peter Tolan, Michael Wimer, Ian Collie, Roxburgh and now Raimi. Kinnear is a co-executive producer.
“Rake” will be the first TV directing job for Raimi, who’s coming off the box office success of “Oz the Great and Powerful,” but far from his first foray onto the small screen. Raimi’s served as an executive producer on everything from “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” and “Xena: Warrior Princess” to “Legend of the Seeker” and Starz’s “Spartacus.”
