The Industry: Bad Habits of the Entertainment Media

A lot of loss this month. Time Warner is shedding its magazines. Variety
is saying goodbye to its daily edition. And Yahoo is finally losing the
jerk-off rule that allowed so many people to work from home in the
first place.

But the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Like the media constantly bitching about Hollywood’s love affair with bad movies.

Gimme a break. “Argo,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Beasts Of The Southern Wild,” “Life Of Pi,” “Moonrise Kingdom,” “Rust & Bone,” “Amour,” “The Perks Of Being A Wallflower,” “Lincoln.” That enough? I can name 15 more solid films just from last year. That’s a lot of good cinema, folks.

So stop complaining about mindless summer action tentpoles. Bad movies have always outnumbered good ones. We just forget about them.

Or screaming that the end of the networks is at hand.

Every time I turn around — especially true at this time of year, with the Upfronts around the corner — some TV “journalist” is writing the story that ad dollars are more plentiful than ever. So what’s the reality, gang? Is it Armageddon? Or is it just fine? Pick one.

Or Toldja! bashing.

Man, everyone hates it when Nikki Finke writes “Toldja!” But every two minutes on Twitter/Facebook, someone is humblebragging their own accomplishments. Here’s the deal: If you hate her self-promotion, then you don’t get to have your own…however sweetly you think you are doing it. Because it’s the same thing. Exactly the same thing.

Or backlash against backlash against backlash.

I’ve lost track in today’s viral hothouse, but between Adele’s gimmicky slum accent, Jennifer Lawrence’s overbaked “screw yous” or Anne Hathaway’s feigned humility, I can’t tell if they’re fake for doing it, you’re fake for liking it…or we’re all fake for now getting a little sick of it. Whatever the case may be, false behavior is pretty easy to spot. The moment I think something’s a little off or disingenuous, it usually is. These three are starting to fall into that category.

This is just the start, gang. Just a taste. Leave a comment and let me know what YOU are sick and tired of here in Hollywood…

Until then, see you at Drai’s.
