Last night at Toronto’s Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, the inaugural Canadian Screen Awards — which merged the previous Genie (film) and Gemini (television) into one ceremony — saw Kim Nguyen’s Academy Award nominated “War Witch” nearly sweep the film categories while “Flashpoint” won top honors as Canada’s best dramatic television series.
Hosted by Martin Short, the ceremony saw “War Witch” take 9 awards including best film, best director and best actress. Xavier Dolan’s “Laurence Anyways” and David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis” also won multiple awards.
“Tonight we celebrate the glamor and talent of our Canadian screen industries,” says Martin Katz, Chair of the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television in a statement. “It is a great moment in the Academy’s history to initiate the new Canadian Screen Awards and to celebrate with all the nominees and winners.”
