Tied game. 2-2 count. Runners on first and third. The pitcher checks on the runner at third, then attempts to pick off the guy on first. His focus now squarely on the next pitch. He gets in position, winds up, and… you’ve got yourself an incredible ad directed by Derek Cianfrance (“Blue Valentine”) and shot by Peter Deming (“Oz the Great and Powerful”). In one single take, Cianfrance and Deming perfectly capture the mounting, and often prolonged, tension that occurs during a baseball game. The ad was made for Dick’s Sporting Goods.
The shot opens with a strike, the camera then circles behind the umpire and catcher before zooming in on third base as the pitcher contemplates throwing in that direction. The camera keeps panning then whips over to first base as the pitcher tries to throw the base runner out. The camera moves in closer within the baseball diamond until it lands on the pitcher’s mound, we get a close-up of the pitcher’s face before he finally delivers one to the plate. Overall, it’s a very well-crafted ad, leading us to the conclusion that Derek Cianfrance could direct the shit out of a baseball movie if he ever had the chance.
The ad not only serves as a reminder that the upcoming baseball season is just a few weeks away, but Cianfrance’s next film “The Place Beyond the Pines” is almost upon us as well. The film, starring Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper, comes out March 29th. Watch below. [Adweek]
