Watch: First Part In Todd Field-Directed Trilogy Of Ads For Captain Morgan

Sometimes a film director’s choice of side commercial gigs poses a change that edges them outside of their usual boundaries. Just look at James Gray‘s Citroen commercial, with Ewan McGregor playing Bourne alongside Vinessa Shaw. But “Little Children” helmer Todd Field has outdone him wholesale, with his own journey into the rum-soaked past of Captain Henry Morgan.

Lest you believe Captain Morgan was nothing more than a conjured advertising tool for alcohol, Field has now directed a three-part series to extend the skipper’s real-life exploits — and to indeed sell spiced rum. But the director has done it with class, hiring Oscar-nominated production designer Nathan Crowley (“The Dark Knight Rises”) to bring 17th century Port Royal, Jamaica to life, complete with 450 extras and a full-scale replica of Morgan’s ship, the Satisfaction.

When Field finally decides to shoot “The Creed of Violence,” you’ll have three examples of how that financial option was presented to him. Catch the first Captain Morgan installment, “Perfect Getaway,” below, before the follow-up chapters are unveiled throughout 2013. And side note: this isn’t the first time Field has worked with the liquor company. He also directed the previous spot, “Secret Passage,” which you can watch below.  [Monsters and Critics]
