Watch: Judd Apatow Talks About Taking On His Twitter Critics with Jimmy Fallon

Writer/director Judd Apatow was on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” earlier this week to promote the Blu-ray release of his latest movie, “This Is 40.” Eventually, the conversation turned to the topic of folks tweeting their negative reviews of his work at him on Twitter. Here he discusses of preferred method of dealing with Twitter trolls:

I approve of this method. If you’re brazen enough to send obnoxious tweets to celebrities, you deserve to have your obnoxious tweets plus any other recent tweets about masturbating animals in Biblical times made fun of on national television (and, then, on the Internet, too).

Also, while we’re on the subject: what is the obsession with sending celebrities really angry tweets? So you didn’t like “This Is 40.” This is a perfectly rational opinion to have. So why take the perfectly irrational next step and tweet at its creator to tell him he sucks? Sycophantically tweeting at celebrities you like, that I get. Who doesn’t want their heroes to know they appreciate their work? Tweeting words of congratulations to, say, Neveldine/Taylor on the continuing awesomeness of every movie they’ve ever made, that’s fine (even if they keep telling me to stop). But tweeting someone just to slam them?

Why even bother? Do you think this will improve Apatow’s next movie? Will he say, “Oh man, Joseph, the guy who fantasizes about touching bear wangs on Noah’s Ark, is really upset with me. Must try harder next time!”?

This is the easiest rhetorical question in the history of rhetorical questions, guys: he will not say that.

Just for the record, if I ever write or say something you dislike so strongly you want to tweet me and tell me about it, just don’t. That’s what comments sections are for.
