Watch: The Trailer for NBC's Lecter Prequel Series 'Hannibal' Showcases Striking Levels of Gore

What’s noteworthy, looking at the trailer for NBC’s upcoming “Silence of the Lambs” prequel series “Hannibal,” is how dark the thing is. From “Dexter” to “CSI” (a recent alum of which, Laurence Fishburne, is here in a recurring role) to the current splatterific “The Following,” serial killer violence remains a great favorite of television, but “Hannibal” appears to have particularly high level of gore, especially for a network show. Gardens of limbs, organs ripped out, bodies impaled on display, gouged eyes — this looks to be one gruesome drama, even if it is from Bryan Fuller, the man behind such whimsical fare as “Dead Like Me,” “Wonderfalls” and “Pushing Daisies.”

Hugh Dancy plays Special Agent Will Graham, who’s able to get inside the minds of the killers he chases using his splendid unstable imagination, while Mads Mikkelsen is Dr. Hannibal Lecter, the acclaimed forensic psychiatrist brought in to treat and help Will, his own murderous habits not yet discovered. The show premieres April 4 on NBC with a pilot directed by David Slade (“Hard Candy,” “30 Days of Night”) — check out the trailer below.
