Why Harvard Is Now America's Team

Move over, Dallas Cowboys. Sorry, New York Yankees.

These perennial, moneyed sports franchises today are taking a backseat to America’s new favorite team: the Harvard Crimson men’s basketball team.

It’s no joke. Harvard’s stirring upset win Thursday night over the New Mexico Lobos vaulted the pride of the lowly Ivy League. As every sports fan recognizes, it is a minor miracle to observe Harvard winning as a 14th seed against a powerful New Mexico squad, seeded third. New Mexico was regarded widely by college basketball experts as a squad that had a genuine shot at advancing on the Final Four and possibly even winning the national championship.

This is good news for the TV networks, CBS and Turner Sports, which will be broadcasting the March Madness slate of games. The tournament now contains a further edge of excitement, adding to the ever-present bracketology — the kooky science of picking the winners.

I sat out the bracketology this year. I told myself I was too busy to engage in such a silly time-suck. Plus, I reminded myself, I haven’t followed college hoops one bit this year. I am in over my head and I’m sure to lose whatever money I commit to some office pool. I don’t have the time. I have too much going on to engage in the Madness. Harrumph.

But I swear: I would’ve picked the Crimson Thursday night against New Mexico.

I swear!
