Alamo Drafthouse, in Los Angeles at Last?

Alamo Drafthouse, in Los Angeles at Last?

The ever-expanding Alamo Drafthouse has signed a letter of intent to open an eight-screen theater in downtown LA.

Of course, “intent” is still a ways from settling in to watch the latest indie hit with a side of queso. Los Angeles Downtown News, which broke the story, cites developer Saeed Farkhondehpour as a source. However, construction has yet to begin on the building that would house the first Los Angeles Drafthouse.

Farkhondehpour said he expects a lease to be signed this month. A
30,000-square-foot single-story building would go up on a parking lot
that sits atop a hill that rises from the commercial plaza of the
96-unit apartment complex. The site currently houses a 300-space parking
lot.

Plans call for the theater to be built into the hill with a rooftop garden. Some parking on the lot would remain.

If all goes according to plan, Farkhondehpour expects the theater to open in about 18 months.

An Alamo spokesperson would not comment on the report beyond saying, “We have had discussions but no formalized agreement.”

Alamo currently has five locations in Austin, three in San Antonio, two in Houston and one each in Winchester, VA; Kansas City and Littleton, CO.
Confirmed expansions this year are Yonkers, NY, Kalamazoo, MI, Dallas, TX and Ashburn, VA. Next year’s include Manhattan and San Francisco; undated are Brooklyn, El Paso and New Braunfels.
