Alec Baldwin: Would Insomniacs and Earthworms Watch Him on TV at 1:35 a.m.?

How much does Alec Baldwin mean to you?

How much do you love his swagger and his cocky on-screen demeanor, dating back to his star turns in Working Girl in 1988 and Glengarry Glen Ross in 1992? Not to mention his ward-winning performance on 30 Rock. Andlet’s not forget the man’s appeal on his podcast Here’s the Thing. or his 16 guest appearances on Saturday Night Live?

Clearly, Alec Baldwin can do it all.

But can he hold a very late-night audience watching him on TV at home at 1:35 a.m.?

There is a buzz at the New York Times that NBC wants Baldwin to take over Carson Daly’s time slot, following Jimmy Fallon and whatever star replaces Fallon at 12:35 a.m.

It’s intriguing, for sure. Baldwin would command a LOT of publicity, at least in the beginning. He has the name value that talk shows crave. He can be personable (when he wants to be) and can be counted on to be witty and charming (when the spirit moves him). Or, Baldwin could establish a new standard in talk shows for not putting on airs and acting bored when he feels bored, unlike the rest of the pack which fawns over the most insipid guests all the time. I’d watch Baldwin if he cut loose with his caustic personality once in a while.

Forbes estimates that Baldwin has reaped $15 million from May 2011 to May 2012. Now that 30 Rock is leaving, his revenue stream will dry up.

Baldwin couldn’t expect to make that kind of dough on a TV talk show — he’d be out-earning Fallon and the 12:35 host if he commanded $15 million a year. So, money could be an obstacle unless he keeps on getting those commercial gigs with Charles Barkley

Or maybe Baldwin doesn’t want to be tied down to the hassle of hosting a show every night.

Let’s see how anxious Alec Baldwin is to keep his flame burning bright.

MEDIA MATRIX QUESTION OF THE DAY: Would you watch Alec Baldwin at 1:35 a.m. every night?
