Ari Folman’s ‘The Congress’ To Open Cannes’ Directors Fortnight

Ari Folman's 'The Congress' To Open Cannes' Directors Fortnight

A day after the official Cannes lineup was announced, the Directors Fortnight section has set its opening film — and it’s one many thought would be in official competition.

Ari Folman’s much-anticipated “The Congress” will open Directors Fortnight, which comes five years after his acclaimed debut “Waltz With Bashir” competed in official competition. It’s a surprising slot for the new film considering the hype surrounding it, but whatever the reasoning, it’s a nice get for Directors Fortnight.

“The Congress” is a live-action/animation hybrid adapted from Polish writer Stanislaw Lem’s novel “The Futurological Congress.” It stars Robin Wright as an actress who gets some serious cash from a big Hollywood studio (called “Miramount”) to be scanned into a “virtual actress.” Harvey Keitel, Paul Giamatti, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Danny Huston also star.

Match Factory has international sales. The Directors’ Fortnight runs from May 16-26 , and will announce its full lineup on Tuesday.
