Beyonce Is A “Modern-Day Feminist”

Beyonce Is A "Modern-Day Feminist"

Beyonce covers this month’s British Vogue. In between questions about her adorable daughter, Blue Ivy, upcoming tour and husband Jay-Z, the publication asked Beyonce if she considers herself a feminist.

That word can be very extreme, but I guess I am a modern-day feminist. I do believe in equality. Why do you have to choose what type of woman you are? Why do you have to label yourself anything? I’m just a woman and I love being a woman.

She also spoke about equality.

I do believe in equality and that we have a way to go, and it’s something that’s pushed aside and something that we have been conditioned to accept.

Beyonce’s feminism shouldn’t be surprising. Earlier this year in an interview for GQ, she called men’s power to define what was sexy or feminine “ridiculous.” And if you had the chance to see her documentary Life Is But a Dream on HBO, her commitment to women shouldn’t be questioned. She’s also been extremely outspoken in support of gay marriage.

However, Beyonce recently came under fire for her new single and naming her tour the “Mrs. Carter Tour.” But we also note that husband, Jay-Z took Beyonce’s name and now both go by Knowles-Carter.

Beyonce is a tremendous force and uses her influence to speak out about equality and supporting women is what matters–not what she labels herself as or names her tour after.
