Word has come from CinemaCon, the movie theatre exhibitor convention now going on in Las Vegas, that Blue Sky is in development on a 3D CGI Charlie Brown feature. The question is, will it look any better than the old Viewmaster slides produced over 30 years ago?
The Charles Schulz estate has, so far, been very smart about licensing Peanuts for animation. The property was successfully adapted to animation by Schulz himself along with producer Lee Mendelsohn and director Bill Melendez from 1965 through 2000. The estate self-produced a very faithful animated special Happiness Is A Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown in 2011.
Steve Martino (Ice Age: Continental Drift) will direct the new film, Blue Sky will produce and 20th Century-Fox will release it in 2015.
Sharon Waxman of The Wrap quoted Fox Chairman Jim Gianopulos as he unveiled the first image of Charlie Brown’s computer generated face:
“This will forever change the face of animation. Prepare to have your minds blown.“
