Kanye West, Daft Punk and Chris Cunningham. A collaboration between those three would be mightily cool indeed and it looks like it might just happen. Daft Punk are currently busy promoting their upcoming album Random Access Memories ahead of its release next month and they’ve been discussing working with Kanye again after the rapper previously sampled them on his track “Stronger.”
However, the collaboration apparently won’t appear on Random Access Memories, but rather on Kanye’s next record, which he has started teasing in recent concert appearances. Adding to this circle of cool, Michel Gondry spoke to Rolling Stone and told them what he knew about the material they’d recorded. Reportedly, the long-time friend of Daft Punk met up with Kanye recently, who played him two songs he worked on with the electronic duo, and here’s what he had to say about them.
“One of them, I told him it sounded solid and powerful – I envisioned a cube when I heard it. He told me Chris Cunningham‘s already directing the video,” he said. Wait, what?
Cunningham, of course, apart from having a superlative surname, is well known for directing acclaimed music videos for the likes of Bjork, Aphex Twin and Madonna. However, he’s also been somewhat MIA the past few years, with rumors popping up now and then of a feature film he’s supposedly working on. But his distinct style on videos for stuff like “Windowlicker” and “All Is Full Of Love” (undoubtedly influenced by his work on Stanley Kubrick‘s incarnation of “A.I.“) makes us curious for whatever he’s cooking with Kanye West and Daft Punk, two artists, who if anything, strive to subvert expectations and traditional norms as much as possible.
So, we’ll keep our ears and eyes peeled and if anything, we’re mostly just excited for something new from Cunningham. And considering he’s recently been hanging with Kanye, we presume Gondry will be doing something with the rapper as well. (He helmed “Heard ‘Em Say” for Kanye a few years ago).
