David O. Russell’s follow-up to “Silver Linings Playbook” — currently filming in Massachusetts — will be titled “American Hustle,” it was announced today.
Previously known as the “Untitled David O. Russell Abscam Project,” the film marks a reunion-of-sorts for both of Russell’s “The Fighter” and “Silver Linings” casts. Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert DeNiro all have roles. They are joined by Jeremy Renner and Louis CK, among others.
The 1970s-set true story follows a con artist (Bale) and his partner in crime (Adams), who were forced to work with a federal agent (Cooper) on the Abscam sting operation, turning the tables on other cons, mobsters and politicians (notably the mayor of impoverished Camden, New Jersey).
“American Hustle” is set for release this December, 2013, clearly being positioned to follow in the footsteps of “The Fighter” and “Silver Linings” as Russell’s third consecutive major Oscar contender.
