Expect an L.A. Alamo Drafthouse in 18 Months

Los Angeles moviegoers, take note! The Alamo Drafthouse has signed a letter of intent to open an eight-screen theater in downtown L.A. Reportedly the location being scoped is near the corner of 4th and Main Street in the city’s Historic Core.

Developer Saaed Farkhondepour anticipates the L.A. Drafthouse to open in 18 months, a thrilling possibility given that the Alamo has been trying to secure a location in the city for years. (LA Observed speculates that the intense competition from boutique theaters the Arclight and Landmark have made the expansion process more difficult than in other cities.)

Alamo CEO Tim League, the ardent initiator and supporter of the “No Texting” theater movement, says that the one qualification for a new Alamo Drafthouse location is that “movie nerds who love movies” live there.

As a movie nerd and Angeleno, I can say that L.A. certainly fits the bill.

Our extensive TOH! interview with League is here.
