First Look: Focus Unveils Summer Slate, 'The World's End' and 'Closed Circuit'

Focus Features will release two films this summer as counterprogramming aimed at the smart demo.

First up is the Edgar Wright comedy “The World’s End” (August 23), written by Wright and Simon Pegg and starring his fave acting duo, Pegg and Nick Frost (2004’s “Shaun of the Dead” (2004) and 2007’s “Hot Fuzz”), along with Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan, and Rosamund Pike. Here’s the official synopsis:

In “The World’s End,” 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by Gary King (Simon Pegg), a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.

A week later on August 28 comes John Crowley’s international thriller “Closed Circuit,” written by Steve Knight (“Eastern Promises”) and starring  Eric Bana (“Munich,” “Hanna”) and Rebecca Hall (“The Town”) as ex-lovers who find their loyalties tested and their lives at risk when they are joined together on the defense team in a terrorism trial. Ciarán Hinds, Riz Ahmed, Anne-Marie Duff, Kenneth Cranham, Denis Moschitto, Julia Stiles, and Jim Broadbent also star.
