Flashback - Jackie Robinson On 'Sesame Street'

With all the interest of late with baseball legend Jackie Robinson, and not only because of the film 42, here’s a rarely seen video that will pique your interest – Robinson reciting the alphabet on Sesame Street back in 1969 during the show’s first season

Of all the countless celebrities who have appeared on the PBS program, Robinson is surely one of the most notable and how it came about is interesting and says volumes about the man.

The idea came to Sesame Street creator Joan Ganz Cooney who met Robinson back in 1969, before the premiere of the program in November that year.

Cooney was working to promote and bring awareness to the show and had a meeting with Robinson for his support and for his help her in her plans for a major outreach project for Street in urban communities.

Robinson, immediately seeing the promise and potential of the show, agreed to appear on the program.

He was the first athlete ever to appear on the show.
