Focus Features has acquired North/Latin American rights to the Matthew McConaughey-starring HIV drama “Dallas Buyers Club,” directed by Jean-Marc Vallee (“The Young Victoria”). The film co-stars Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner. Focus plans to release the film domestically later this year.
The fact-based drama stars McConaughey as real-life Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, a man who was embroiled in a life-or-death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies after being diagnosed as HIV-positive. To combat the disease, Woodroof grabbed hold of non-toxic alternative treatments by means both legal and illegal.
“I’m extremely
pleased that we are partnered with Focus Features,” Valee said. “They have a long and
successful history of sharing memorable stories. Ron Woodroof’s story
is one of an imperfect man and his fight for survival, during a confused
and desperate time. We all believe that this film had to finally be
made, and we are all grateful and privileged to be part of this
project.”
