HBO Nabs TV Rights to Whoopi Goldberg's Directorial Debut, Documentary 'Moms Mabley: I Got Somethin' to Tell You'

HBO has acquired all US broadcast and home video rights to Whoopi Goldberg’s directorial debut, “Moms Mabley: I Got Somethin’ to Tell You,” a feature-length documentary about the iconic stand-up comedienne of the title. The film will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 20.

African-American Jackie “Moms” Mabley (1894-1975) broke boundaries in the world of stand-up comedy by tackling topics such as gender, sex and racism, making her one of the first triple X-rated performers on the comedy circuit. Goldberg explores Mabley’s legacy and historical significance through recently unearthed photographs, performance footage and new interviews from numerous celebrated comedians, entertainers and historians, including Eddie Murphy, Joan Rivers, Sydney Poitier, Kathy Griffin, Bill Cosby and Quincy Jones.

The documentary will debut exclusively on HBO later this year.
