HBO is giving us some counterprogramming to chew on over the summer, when multiplexes are jammed with mindless popcorn fare. They’re debuting the second season of Aaron Sorkin’s “The Newsroom” on Sunday July 14 at 10-11 PM ET/PT.
This season series creator Sorkin sends the staff of “News Night” on a chase after a mysterious tip, which leads to a story that ultimately spins out of control.
We’ll see how much juicy material Sorkin parses out to his hungry ensemble cast, led by Jeff Daniels as the anchorman, Emily Mortimer as his executive producer, their boss Sam Waterston, and a sprawling younger news team. Of that group, Olivia Munn has fared the best.
Of course I want more from network honcho Jane Fonda, who wields more far more authority than Mortimer, who has a ditzy Annie Hall quality. The show’s gender dynamics and politics have yielded endless chatter, which is sure to continue.
Sorkin executive produces along with Scott Rudin and Alan Poul.
