We’re not quite in a physical media-free future yet, despite Netflix’s bold move in premiering a major TV series that existed only (at first) online. Deadline points out that Amazon is currently taking pre-orders on Blu-ray and DVD sets of “House of Cards” season one. The box sets, which have list prices of $65.99 and $55.99, will be available June 11st from Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Netflix offered the full 13-episode first season of “House of Cards” for streaming on February 1st. The show, headed up by showrunner Beau Willimon, directed in part by David Fincher and starring Kevin Spacey, was exclusively available to subscribers of Netflix’s streaming service — even DVD-only holdout subscribers were out of luck.
There’s no word yet on what, if any, extra features will be on the discs — the primary advantage the medium still generally holds over digital-only releases. But Netflix’s window on the political drama, which was produced by Media Rights Capital, is not indefinite, so anyone who’s anxious to permanently have access to the series might be interested in ponying up for a DVD or Blu-ray set.
The second season of “House of Cards,” which was greenlit along with the first, is beginning production soon.
