In the Works: AMC Develops Futuristic Crime Series 'Ballistic City' from 'Pacific Rim' Screenwriter and 'Oblivion' Director

AMC is developing a futuristic sci-fi series, “Ballistic City,” to be penned by “Pacific Rim” screenwriter Travis Beacham, with “Oblivion” director Joseph Kosinski attached to act as executive producer, and to direct the first episode should the series move to the pilot stage. Per the Hollywood Reporter, the project will be a potential companion to “The Walking Dead.”

“Ballistic City” centers on a former cop in the criminal underworld of a city inside a spaceship. The craft is destined for a new planet; the series is conceptually described as “Chinatown” meets “Bladerunner.”

At AMC, “Breaking Bad” is approaching its series finale (debuting this summer), while the sixth and penultimate season of “Mad Men” got underway on April 7. “The Killing” has been resuscitated for a lower-budget third season. New crime series “Low Winter Sun,” starring Lennie James of “The Walking Dead,” is in the immediate pipeline, coming this summer.

Kosinski’s “Oblivion,” starring Tom Cruise as a drone repairman assigned to a decimated future Earth, hits theaters on April 17 (our TOH! review is here). Guillermo Del Toro’s kaiju tentpole “Pacific Rim,” starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba and Rinko Kikuchi, hits theaters on July 12 (trailer here).
