Screen icon Robert Redford is attached to star in the next film by David Lowery, who caught plenty of buzz at this year’s Sundance with his lyrical Western “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.” The new project is “The Old Man and the Gun,” an adaptation of David Grann’s 2003 New Yorker article.
The true story focuses on Forrest Tucker, a bank robber who, over the course of his career, boasted 18 escapes from jail, including Alcatraz and San Quentin. Tucker, who died in 2005, is 78 in Grann’s article, and still pining to loot more banks — which he did, getting an additional 13-year sentence after a robbery in 2000.
Lowery’s adaptation will focus on one period in Tucker’s life, though no specifics have been revealed. Presumably it will be near the time of the article’s focus; Redford is now 76.
Redford’s “The Company You Keep,” which he also stars in, hit theaters last weekend. (Our TOH! Q&A on the film is here.) He also has Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” in the pipeline.
“The Old Man and the Gun” will be Lowery’s directorial follow-up to “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,” while he is also being tapped by Disney to write a reinvented “Pete’s Dragon.”
