Jada Pinkett Smith Will Star In Colombian Thriller As Overbrook Ventures Into Latin America

Jada Pinkett Smith Will Star In Colombian Thriller As Overbrook Ventures Into Latin America

The Overbrook/Smith Family Entertainment empire continues to expand – this time, it’s making its inaugural push into the Latin American cinema market with a Colombian thriller titled La escribana de uraba, which, according to Google, translate to The Clerk of Urabá.

According to several Spanish-language websites, Jada Pinkett Smith will star in the film, which is said to be inspired by true events – the true story of a 14 year old Colombian girl whose father was killed in the late 1980s and who decides to tell his story, after she’s granted asylum in the United States.

The film, however, will instead focus on a representative of a US multinational investigating the death of one of its employees in Colombia – perhaps the father of the girl above.

Jada Pinkett Smith will play the US multinational representative investigating the death in Colombia, in a film that will be both in Spanish and English.

As you can see above, Jada was in Colombia (Bogota specifically) this week, checking out the lay of the land, and even met with President Juan Manuel Santos, Culture Minister Mariana Garces and representatives of various organizations, to discuss the project.

She also met with the director, Jhonny Hendrix Hinestroza, an Afro-Colombian filmmaker (photo left) who made his feature film debut last year with the acclaimed drama Chocó – a film that we’ve covered and continue to follow, as it travels the film festival circuit.

Hinestroza will co-direct with Michael and Jeff Zimbalist (The Two Escobars), who also penned the screenplay.

Production is expected to begin in the next few months, with Jhonny Hendrix, the Smiths’ Overbrook International, and Michael and Jeff Zimbalist of All Rise Films all producing.

Expect a cast that includes both American and Colombian actors.

With shooting scheduled to begin later this year, we should have all the necessary production data soon, so stay tuned.
