Media’s Favorite Headline: “We Got Him”

Media's Favorite Headline: "We Got Him"

When Boston Mayor Thomas Menino tweeted, “We got him,” he provided the national media with a dream headline.

Menino sent out his tweet at around 9:00 p.m., Eastern, on Friday night, following the apprehension of the suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings.

Menino’s tweet could be proclaimed in 128-point type. It was such a release and a relief for a nation that waited anxiously for news that the suspect had bee

n captured.

Many media critics — and this one included — had ripped the news media for spending too much time going over the same old ground throughout the week, as if to find a reason to stay on the air without providing fresh analysis during the 24/7 news cycle.

But the media did well once the story had been resolved. The TV anchors resisted the urge to show emotion, let alone cheer for the police. It was over and the journalists appropriately focused on what was coming up ahead — the medical treatment, for instance. CBS News reported that the suspect had suffered two wounds, including on his neck, explaining the blood he spilled.

Look for the headline, “We got him” on the front page of newspapers, national news magazines and TV stories.

It’s too good to pass up.
