Meet the 2013 Tribeca Filmmakers #48: Yves Montmayeur Explores the Work of Michael Haneke in New Documentary

Documentary filmmaker, film critic and Cannes press conference moderator Yves Montmayeur explores the work of Austrian auteur Michael Haneke in his latest feature, “Michael H. Profession: Director.” Montmayeur, who has made several making-of documentaries for Haneke, gives an intimate look at the the two-time Palme d’Or winner and his on-set process. Featuring interviews with Emmanuelle Riva, Isabelle Huppert and Juliette Binoche, the film looks back on the last two-and-a-half decades of Haneke’s artistry.

What it’s about: A portrait of film director Michael Haneke.

About the filmmaker: Since 1999, I’m directing documentaries about cinema. With a predilection for Asian cinema and directors from countries such
as Hong Kong, Korea and Japan ( Miike Takashi, Johnnie To, Hayao
Miyazaki…). But also unusual western personalities such as Italian actress-director
Asia Argento, french -Belgium actor Olivier Gourmet (working with
Dardenne Brothers) and of course Michael Haneke.
I’m a film critic too. Regularly contributing to some tv magazine on
ARTE tv (the french/german cultural tv network) as journalist and
filmmaker. Directing reportages and special programs about cinema, music
and visual arts (on Guillermo del Toro, David Lynch, David Cronenberg,
Takeshi Kitano…). And from some years i’m working as moderator for the official press conferences at the Cannes Film Festival.

What else do you want audiences to know about your film? I had the privilege to follow the work of Michael Haneke for the last 20 years ! So I think my film is a unique document to approach the way Haneke is working on set. But I’ve also tried to reveal the man Michael behind the author Haneke.

What was your biggest challenge in developing this project? Editing with so many different film sources. Such as Mini DV, DV cam, HDV, Beta SP, Digital Beta, Super 8…

What would you like Tribeca audiences to come away with after seeing your film? Make people want to see or see again the films of Michael Haneke.

Did any specific films inspire you? I tried to become myself as much ‘hanekian’ as possible in my way of working on this project.

What do you have in the works? A lot of material from behind the scenes, interviews with Michael
Haneke, and actors Isabelle Huppert, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Juliette
Binoche…
