Netflix has set a deliberately varied first year of original programming for itself. First there came the glossy Kevin Spacey political drama “House of Cards” in February, then the Eli Roth supernatural series “Hemlock Grove” in April. The resurrected favorite “Arrested Development” will be next to arrive in May and, now, women in prison dramedy “Orange Is the New Black” has a release date set for July, where it will be the streaming site’s first show with a female slant.
Netflix has announced a premiere date of Thursday, July 11 for the new series, which was created by Jenji Kohan (“Weeds”) and is adapted from the 2010 memoir of the same name by Piper Kerman. The show, which was produced by Lionsgate Television, stars Taylor Schilling (“Mercy,” “The Lucky One”) as Piper, an engaged thirtysomething Brooklynite whose relationship with a drug-runner named Alex (Laura Prepon) a decade before results in her arrest and a year-long stint in a federal penitentiary.
As with Netflix’s previous series, all 13 hour-long episodes of “Orange is the New Black” will be available at launch.
