On Monday April 8 at 10 AM funeral services were held for Roger Ebert, who died Thursday at age 70, at Chicago’s Holy Name Cathedral. Family, friends and fans including Ebert’s wife Chaz, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and filmmaker Steve James flocked to the service. (Our round-up of reaction to Ebert’s loss is here.) His last review, of Terrence Malick’s “To the Wonder,” ended with the words: “to reach beneath the surface, and find the soul in need.” Brainpicker has more wisdom from Ebert’s writings here.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to arts and education non-profit The Ebert Foundation, c/o Northern Trust, 50 S. LaSalle St., Chicago, 60603. A memorial tribute to Ebert will also be held on Thursday night at the Chicago Theater; doors open at 6 PM. The Ebertfest Film Festival will go on as planned April 17-21 in Champaign, Illinois.
