Continuing its expansion of its original programming lineup, Starz announced today that it is developing a new original drama series with former “The Newsroom” writer and Peabody Award-winning MTV News journalist Gideon Yago.
Set during the early stages of the Vietnam War, “Airborne” is described by the network as a coming of age story following a young helicopter crew trying to make sense of the war “as they fight for survival, sanity, their souls, and each other.” Starz regulars Rob Tapert and Aaron Lam (“Spartacus”) will produce the series, with Yago taking primary writing duties.
“Even though we are using Vietnam and the early days of air cavalry as a backdrop, our hope is to bring the audience timeless stories about what makes a hero and how a group of young people fight to retain their humanity in the midst of a surreal and terrible conflict,” said Yago.
In addition to “Airborne,” Starz is currently working on their as-yet-untitled ballet drama with “Breaking Bad” co-executive producer Moira Walley-Beckett and Lawrence Bender, and will see the premiere of David S. Goyer’s historical fantasy “Da Vinci’s Demons” on April 12th. Period drama “Magic City” will also be back for a second season sometime this year.
