Trailer of the Week: Ryan Gosling is Back and Bloody in Red Band for Nicolas Refn's 'Only God Forgives'

Before the Trailer, We Thought: Few films are more anticipated this year than the re-teaming of Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling, the most sadistic director/star bromance currently in operation. 2011’s “Drive,” one of the most divisive films of that year after killing on its debut in Cannes, is already a burgeoning cult classic and brought the world to an even higher level of Gosling obsession inundation. So far we’ve had tantalizingly little about the film to go on other than a single still and the assurance that the Bangkok set revenge thriller would certainly be as bloody and bonkers as the Danish auteur’s other films.

And Now? The first trailer has finally been released by Weinstein Company arm RADiUS-TWC and it looks exactly how you would expect, in the best way possible. An obvious sibling to the glossy noir of “Drive,” the trailer is mysterious, intriguing and chock full of gorgeously foreboding lighting and the slow-motion choreographed scenes of brutality that earned Refn his reputation.

Starting off with an ominous tracking shot down a red-soaked hallway and a voice-over by Kristin Scott Thomas, playing Gosling’s mother, the trailer quickly takes a turn for the violent as Gosling’s character, the manager of an illegal Thai boxing ring, hunts his brother’s killer, led by an effectively terrifying Vithaya Pansringarm. Gosling keeps it characteristically quiet throughout before delivering a single line at the end: “Wanna fight?”

For fans of “Drive,” this pretty stunning teaser should certainly amp up the anticipation even more. RADiUS-TWC will release the film on July 19th.
