This week, Michael Bay is going indie — kinda — with “Pain & Gain,” his first non-“Transformers” movie in quite some time. And it seems theater owners aren’t too happy about it. At last week’s CinemaCon, Deadline revealed that after seeing the completed movie, some theater folks complained it was “too long and too gory” and that the comedy and hard violence didn’t come together. But maybe they were just bummed there were no robots and a built-in audience for this, meaning that this might require a bit more effort to get people into cinemas. While we wait for the verdicts to come in, all we’ll say is a movie that has Mark Wahlberg slam dunking over kids and dominating the court is a movie that we will gladly watch.
A new clip for “Pain & Gain” has arrived and it takes the “stepmother” moment from the trailers and expands on it, showing Wahlberg in half-court fury, taking it to the paint against a bunch of kids. It’s pretty rad with Wahlberg doing the vacant, masculine, airhead schtick pretty much perfectly as usual. So yeah, this made us chuckle, but whether this tone works for an entire movie we’ll have to see. But we’re optimistic and hopeful. “Pain & Gain” runs the offense this Friday.
