Joss Whedon‘s reputation is largely staked on his genre stuff from “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” to “Firefly” to, of course, “The Avengers” and his continued work in the Marvel universe. But it seems he’s eager to prove he can do more than tell the stories of superheroes and the supernatural, and so he got some friends together and literally shot a movie in his backyard. The result? “Much Ado About Nothing.”
Clearly choosing to shed any of the usual toolkit he works with — the film is lensed in black-and-white and you’re not going to see any explosions — the results seem to speak for themselves. Shakespeare always seems to have the danger of sounding academic, cold and creaky, but Whedon seems to have found the drama in the dialogue, and the contemporary setting adds a nice bit of jazz to the proceedings. And indeed, our review out of Toronto called it simply “delightful.”
