Watch: Ron Howard Races for Oscar Gold With 'Rush' Trailer

After teaming up five years earlier for the Oscar-nominated “Frost/Nixon,” director Ron Howard and writer Peter Morgan have come together once more for the Formula 1 racing drama “Rush,” the true story of two clashing European rivals who defined the sport throughout the 1970s. Universal has released the first U.S. trailer for the film, ahead of its late September release date, likely priming the film for late August, early September festival screenings in Venice or Toronto.

Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl (“Inglourious Basterds”) star as rivals James Hunt and Nika Lauda whose rivalry throughout the Formula 1 scene comes to an almost fatal conclusion when Lauda’s vehicle swerves off the track during the German Grand Prix, severely injuring him and leading Hunt to win the race. When Lauda regains his ability to compete, Hunt must grapple with the injury he may have caused as well as the re-emergence of his greatest opponent.

Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara and Stephen Mangan head up the supporting cast. While the film’s release is still fairly distant, Universal is likely attempting to make the first steps of an eventual Oscar push for the film, hopefully giving Howard the push-back he needs after following up the success of “Frost/Nixon,” with his two recent critical bombs “Angels and Demons” and “The Dilemma.”

“Rush” will be released theatrically September 20. Watch the full trailer below.
