After much hemming and hawing and uncertainty, Showtime has confirmed that the upcoming season of “Dexter,” the serial killer drama’s eighth, will also be its last.
The premium network released a sneak preview video for “Dexter” today that describes the upcoming 12 episodes as “the final season,” promising that “the end begins” on the premiere date of Sunday, June 30th at 9pm.
The video is of an encounter between Dexter (Michael C. Hall) and his stepsister/secret keeper Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) in a grocery store, where Deb looks the worse for the wear after what occurred in December’s season finale, telling Dexter “I shot the wrong person in that trailer.”
Even for devotees of the show, news that an end game is in place has to be welcome, if only because “Dexter” can potentially face some serious consequences for his years of vigilante murders after squeaking by again and again. Carpenter reported via Twitter that Hall will be making his directorial debut in the second episode of this upcoming season.
