Director Zack Snyder wants his upcoming superhero “Man of Steel” to do well; not just because it would mark the continuation of the franchise after a disappointing 2006 reboot, but also because it would cement his capabilities helming a “Justice League” movie if it succeeds, so he’s got a lot on his plate. Thus, it’s no surprise that he’s going to gush about the movie to get butts in seats, but has he revealed too many changes that might anger die-hard fans?
In an interview with SFX Magazine, Snyder waxed rhapsodic on the upcoming adventure. He’s got nothing but praise for Henry Cavill’s portrayal of the red-caped hero, including comparing him to fellow “Superman” star, Christopher Reeve. Snyder wants new audiences to see the actor as the character entirely and says that Cavill wearing the iconic suit is “the difference between being Superman and dressing up like Superman. If I’m dressed up like Superman it’s a Halloween costumer. If you’re Henry it’s your clothes.”
In terms of changes Snyder’s made to the look of the movie, he comments on creating Superman’s flying as “a more violent experience. It’s raw. It takes effort to do. It’s almost like there’s this kind of Right Stuff quality to it. He’s constantly booming around, accelerating. You think he’s going as fast as he can and then it’s like ‘Yeeaahh!’ He’s always got an extra gear he can use.”
He’s also adapted Superman’s home planet, Krypton for newer audiences. “I really wanted my Krypton to be this kind of special place that’s immersive and totally different from Earth, but not unbelievable. And ancient. I really wanted to give this ancient feeling to Krypton,” he explained. “I love technology that’s rusty because it’s so old. It’s so advanced, but it’s so old. That was the kind of world that I tried to create. A dying world that’s ancient and torn apart.”
