Black Radical Imagination collective
series of short films programs, curated by programmer-in-residence Amir George of Chicago’s Black Cinema House, and Los Angeles based filmmaker curator Erin Christovale, comes
to Chicago this weekend, after screenings in New York and Los Angeles.
The formation of the collective, as the creators say, was
a result of “a series of discussions around the boundaries and limitations that are
historically given to people of color. Specifically, in the film industry these
restrictions are often digested and kept to propel a vicious cycle of negative
identification. Black Radical Imagination invokes a futurist aesthetic where
artists identify themselves and reclaim their own unique stories.”
Among the films to be screened in Chicago are Afronauts (Cristina De Middel); Reifying
Desire 3 (Jacolby Satterwhite); Mae’s Journal (Amir George); The Changing Same
(Cauleen Smith); and Pumzi (Wanuri
The screening will take place at the Black Cinema House in Chicago, located at 6901 S. Dorchester on Sunday May 19 starting at 6PM.
