‘Blue is the Warmest Color’ Tops Indiewire’s Cannes Critics Poll

'Blue is the Warmest Color' Tops Indiewire's Cannes Critics Poll

Abdellatif Kechiche’s lesbian romance “Blue is the Warmest Color” already won the top prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and placed #1 on Screen Daily‘s annual Cannes Critics Jury Grid of Competition films. Now it’s also topped Indiewire’s poll of Cannes critics. I guess the movie’s, like, kind of good or something.

Kechiche’s film didn’t just top our survey; it dominated it, taking home the awards for Best Feature, Best Director (Kechiche), Best Lead Performance (Adele Exarchopoulos), Best Supporting Performance (Lea Seydoux) and Biggest Surprise. It also came in second, to the Coen Brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis,” for Best Scene, and in fourth for Best Ensemble behind “The Past” from “A Separation” director Asghar Farhadi. That’s a showing in seven categories in a poll of just nine categories — and one of them was Best First Feature which it was ineligible for (that award went to Diego Quermada-Diez’s “La Jaula De Oro“). That leaves Most Anticipated But Missed at Cannes, which went to “Stranger By the Lake” by director Alain Guiraudie.

The Coens’ “Inside Llewyn Davis” placed second in the Best Feature, Best Director, and Best Lead Performance (Oscar Isaac) categories, making it the unofficial silver medal winner. Third place in our Best Feature category went, kind of surprisingly, to James Gray’s “The Immigrant,” which was hailed by some critics, but dismissed by enough others to prompt its director to make some less-than-kind remarks about its detractors to Indiewire‘s Nigel Smith.
