From the Wire: Lars Ulrich, Roger Ebert Fan

Just about everyone, it seems, was a Roger Ebert fan. The latest and perhaps most unlikely member of the Ebert cult: Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich!

At RogerEbert.com, Chaz Ebert has the details in a piece entitled “Postcards From Chaz to Roger:”

“Lars Ulrich of Metallica stopped an interview to tell me how how much your movie reviewing and philosophy meant to him over the years. It has been like that the whole time I’ve been here. I don’t think you had any idea of your impact.”

The rest of the article is relatively light on cameos from heavy metal luminaries, but heavy with poignant commentary from Chaz to her late husband. I found this passage particularly moving:

“‘Even when the theater goes dark, the song still lives inside of you.’ You asked me to tweet those words on your Twitter account, so when I did it I didn’t use a ‘Chaz here.’ And I think people sensed those were your words and not mine, but it is so complicated to explain this, so I won’t even try.”

On more practical matters, Chaz notes that by this time at last year’s festival she had already seen “Amour” and “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” not only the best movies of Cannes 2012, but some of the best movies she’d ever seen. In contrast, she says, this year’s lineup has produced few true highlights, despite strong work from the Coen Brothers (“Inside Llewyn Davis”) and Asghar Farhadi (“The Past”). I’m sitting in my apartment in Brooklyn instead of on the beach in the South of France, but that’s the sense I’ve gotten reading the coverage so far; lots of good movies, few truly great ones.

In Ebert’s absence, RogerEbert.com is covering Cannes with a team that also includes blogger Michał Oleszczyk, former Time Out Chicago Film Editor Ben Kenigsberg, and Barbara Scharres of the Siskel Film Center. Ride the lightning over there for plenty more dispatches from the festival.
