With “Arrested Development” set to make its return via Netflix on May 26th, the streaming platform has been stepping up marketing efforts with some innovative approaches to touting the long-absent show. Netflix has been releasing posters representing each character with a signature object (like an ice cream sandwich or a hook prosthetic) and touring the globe with the Bluth Banana Stand (today’s location was Times Square, with prizes given to the first 96 attendees arriving in cutoffs for the “Never Nudes reunion”).
But insertmeanywhere.biz is a step beyond — supposedly the website of David Cross’ doctor turned aspiring actor Tobias Fünke, the site is really a would-be meme generator offering up clips and photos of Cross as Tobias in different costumes in front of a green screen. The footage and images are presented as Tobias’ audition for James Cameron (whose movies he claims to not have seen, though he did catch him on “Entourage”), with the character urging the “Avatar” director to check out his clips and, if he likes them, to just go ahead and insert him in the movie.
You can choose from “Average Fellow,” “Cowpoke,” “Doctor,” “Action Hero,” “Big Man on Campus” and “Motorcycle Ruffian” (“If you’re looking to make a dark, indie film about gang violence, this may be the character you’re after.”). The “sizzling reel” below hints at some of the possibilities.
