John C. Reilly Confirmed For Role In 'Guardians Of The Galaxy,' Joe Cornish Reportedly Shortlisted For 'Star Trek 3' & More

Updated: John C. Reilly is confirmed to play Ronan The Accuser in “Guardians Of The Galaxy.”

Guardians of the Galaxy” is over a year away from its planned release date and filming is set to get underway very soon. So far, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Michael Rooker, Ophelia Lovibond and Lee Pace are all planned to appear in the Marvel film, but it’s this latest piece of casting information that has really perked our interest. Marvel has apparently made an offer for John C. Reilly to play the part of Rhomann Dey, a character that has been described as being the Agent Coulson of the ‘Guardians’ world. His character would be serving as the “go-between,” keeping the Guardians in line while reporting their activities back to S.H.I.E.L.D.

Reilly has proven to be an extremely versatile actor in the past 25 years and has an Oscar nomination under his belt, but this would be his first venture into superhero territory. We’re definitely hoping he can come on board. If he did, he could wind up having a colleague that would be a liaison for the Guardians. For that role, Marvel is looking at names such as Hugh Laurie, Alan Rickman and Ken Watanabe as possibilities. So what do you think, John C. Reilly with a side of Alan Rickman? That sounds pretty good to us. [Hitfix]

In other superhero movie-related news, the cast for “X-Men: Days of Future Past” is already pretty epic with Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry (among others) from the original trilogy joining the ‘First Class’ cast of Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Nicholas Hoult. It looks like you can add James Marsden to the list as well. Marsden, who played Cyclops in the first three “X-Men” films, has apparently been spotted with Halle Berry and director Bryan Singer on a plane to Montreal where “Days of Future Past” is currently shooting. He would be rounding out a cast that also includes Anna Paquin, Ellen Page and Peter Dinklage. We’ll see how Bryan Singer handles this massive cast when “X-Men: Days of Future Past” comes out on July 18, 2014. [AMC]

Lastly, while J.J. Abrams continues to gear up for the upcoming “Star Wars” film, Paramount is looking for someone who could fill in Abrams’ shoes for the follow-up to “Star Trek Into Darkness.” One name that has been thrown around of late is writer/director Joe Cornish, according to El Mayimbe of the Latino Review. Cornish, of course, is the man behind “Attack the Block,” which came out in 2011. He also helped co-write the screenplay to Steven Spielberg’s “The Adventures of Tintin” and has worked with Edgar Wright on the script for “Ant-Man.” “Star Trek 3” would definitely be a giant leap in scope and budget from “Attack the Block,” but the word is Cornish is definitely a contender (among many). Will he be given the opportunity? We hope to find out soon.
