More and more films premiere on Video on Demand — if they don’t simply bypass a theatrical release altogether. Because VOD reviews are often scarce and hard to find, Criticwire created VODetails, a recurring column to help you figure out whether a new VOD release is worth your hard-earned dollar. This time we’re looking at “Sightseers,” a dark comedy about a couple of serial killers from the director of “Kill List” — not a movie about a team of psychic investigators whose visions of the dead enable them to fight crime with the help of a highly intelligent dog.
Director: Ben Wheatley
Cast: Alice Lowe, Steve Oram, Eileen Davies
Criticwire Average: B+ (45 critics)
Official Synopsis: “Chris (Oram) wants to show Tina (Lowe) his world and he wants to do it his way — on a journey through the British Isles in his beloved Abbey Oxford Caravan. Tina’s led a sheltered life and there are things that Chris needs her to see — the Crich Tramway Museum, the Ribblehead Viaduct, the Keswick Pencil Museum and the rolling countryside that accompanies these wonders in his life. But it doesn’t take long for the dream to fade. Litterbugs, noisy teenagers and pre-booked caravan sites, not to mention Tina’s meddling mother, soon conspire to shatter Chris’s dreams and send him, and anyone who rubs him up the wrong way, over a very jagged edge…”

Reviews:
Meredith Borders, Badass Digest:
“A wickedly funny, brutal little film.”
“Wheatley’s control has never seemed greater.”
Ethan Anderton, First Showing:
“What’s great about this horror comedy… is its approach to such dark subject matter in a lighter, but still very bloody, package.”
“Ben Wheatley’s secret weapon in his works to date has been his ability to make a body count count for something, and ‘Sightseers’ is no exception.”
“He’s still cultivating his storytelling abilities, but Wheatley has clearly found his sweet spot: a darkly funny place with serious potential.”
“Sightseers” is now available on VOD.
